The violence in Gaza on Monday didn’t stop the big show in Jerusalem from going ahead: visiting dignitaries and Israeli VIP’s gathered for the official dedication of what is now the U.S. Embassy.
President Trump hailed the U.S. embassy move, as at least 52 Palestinian protesters were killed in what was the deadliest day in Gaza since the 2014 war with Israel.

At a press conference early Monday morning, visiting U.S. Senators applauded the president for keeping a promise that Congress made in 1995.

VICE founder Shane Smith joined Senator Lindsay Graham at the press conference and spoke to protestors demonstrating outside the embassy.

Senator Graham told VICE News that the resulting violence from the embassy move is simply the cost of doing business. “If you’re waiting to do something bold in the Middle East without conflict you’ll die waiting,” he said.

The world knows Gabby Giffords as a gun violence survivor and former congresswoman from Arizona who has emerged as a leader in the movement for common sense gun legislation. What the world doesn't know is the amount work Gabby has to put in behind the scenes, every day, to be able to continue her work.

Giffords was shot in the head at close range at a constituent meeting in 2011. She survived the attack, but with critical injuries. Since that time, she and her husband, retired astonaut, Captain Mark Kelly, have dedicated their lives to ending gun violence.


"This isn't about responsible gun ownership this is about the irresponsible people out there.," Mark Kelly told VICE News. "The gun lobby says this these reforms are an infringement on your rights. They're not. Nobody's trying to take away anybody's Second Amendment right, if you're a responsible person."

Gabby and Mark's work for common sense gun legislation can be mentally and physically taxing. And for Gabby, it's all the more grueling because of the challenges of her own injury. But that's not stopping her from charging ahead — with her recovery, and with her cause.

Veteran comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock say that millennials can’t take a joke — but some comics often won’t ever get the opportunity to perform on campus in front of them.

They complain college campuses are minefields of competing grievances and sensitivities for comics whose jokes touch on sensitive subjects like assault or gender,

VICE News went to Boston to talk to three campus bookers — the college comedy gatekeepers — who contend that they’re merely reflecting student taste.

They say they feel old-school comedians are woefully behind the times and need to acknowledge that certain jokes, particularly those about identity and sexual assault, can potentially cause psychological harm. And it’s their job, they say, to protect students from it.

But at New York City’s famous Comedy Cellar, where VICE News talked with standup Judy Gold, nothing is off limits (provided that the joke is funny). Gold also warns students that the “world doesn't have to adjust” to student sensitivities.

New Zealand’s Mackenzie Basin is famous — because of the movie industry. Its iconic brown grasslands were featured prominently in The Lord of the Rings movie, The Return of the King, and more recently, in A Wrinkle in Time. But those landscapes are changing. And ecologists blame New Zealand’s booming dairy industry, which they say is transforming the naturally arid MacKenzie region — that “Gondorian” gold — into green pasture.

“You go to the MacKenzie, and the biological values are not obvious. And I don't think farmers understand them,” says Dave Kelly, an ecologist at the University of Canterbury. “And so you put irrigation and fertilizer on it; you are obliterating it.”

New Zealand produces more dairy for the global market than any other country - and alone provides half of China’s dairy imports. But the massive dairy industry has an environmental impact to match: the country’s 6.6 million cows are contaminating the iconic landscapes that the tourism industry depends on.

“We've got quite a few dairy farms in the region. And so, where 15 years ago, the landscape was [tussock grassland], now you have big irrigators and it’s green and lush with grass for those dairy farms,” says Dawn Goorah, a local Lord of The Rings tour operator. “If you look at an overall view you actually see [crop] circles right throughout the Mackenzie.”

The landscape change isn’t just an eyesore. The Mackenzie provides a unique landscape for some of New Zealand's endemic, and increasingly threatened plants and animals, Kelly says. And now they’re threatened. But the value of that natural landscape isn’t always apparent to farmers. “A lot of people look at those landscapes and they think that they are no use,” he says.

VICE News traveled to New Zealand to see how the dairy industry is changing the Mackenzie — and to participate in a Lord of the Rings Tour.
