Time Out’s associate Things to Do, Comedy and LGBT editor David Goldberg took a break from his busy schedule to get a makeover from Horrorchata. Who is Horrorchata, you ask? She’s the cover star of Time Out’s September 13th issue, an influential New York drag queen, and cofounder of Bushwig.

Bushwig is a two-day drag, music and arts festival. The event is infamous in New York City’s drag community as one of the largest artistic extravaganzas of the year. Aptly named Bushwig after the neighborhood where the event originated, Bushwick, the fest has since moved to the Knockout Center in Queens. Known for its creative shows, Bushwig hosts performances from some of Brooklyn’s most innovative drag queens, including Merrie Cherry, Pepper LaBeijia, Lady Bunny and Jonny Wo.

We had the honor of hosting Horrorchata in the Time Out office for David’s makeover. We learned a lot, including the steps to a perfect drag look:
Base: Cover up any undereye bags, spots or five o'clock shadow with a few layers of primer, foundation, concealer and finishing powder.
Eyes: Apply your eye shadow. We went with some very bold colors. David’s eyelashes are naturally long, but never fear fake lashes.
Lips: We went with a very bright pink. Choose something that pops and don't be afraid to draw them on a little larger (or a lot) than they naturally are.
Contour: one of the most important parts of drag makeup is the contour. Using powders darker than your original base, draw in high cheekbones, blush up your lips and use the light to your advantage. (There’s many tutorials on contouring floating around Youtube.)
Stones: These are technically optional, but we think they’re mandatory.
Now you’re fully equipped to show up to Bushwig, or anywhere else, in your best drag look.
